Making a Choice

A man by the name of Dr. Crane shared a story about a woman who came into his office who wanted to get rid of her husband. She said, "I not only want to get rid of him, but I want to get even with him. Before I divorce him, I want to hurt him as much as he has hurt me." Dr. Crane suggested an ingenious plan, he said, "Go home and act as if you really love your husband. Tell him how much he means to you. Praise him for every decent trait. Go out of your way to be as kind, considerate, and generous as possible. Spare no efforts to please him, and enjoy him. Make him believe you love him. And after you've convinced him of your undying love and that you cannot live without him, then drop the bomb on him. Tell him that you’re getting a divorce. And that will really hurt him." With revenge in her eyes, she smiled and exclaimed, "Beautiful, beautiful. Will he ever be surprised?" And she did it with enthusiasm. For two months she showed love, kindness, listening, giving, reinforcing, and sharing. When she didn't return to Dr.Crane, he called her. And said, "Are you ready now to go through with the divorce?" "Divorce?" she said. "Never! I discovered that I really do love him." Somehow her actions had changed her feelings. Motion resulted in emotion. It was when she chose to love him that she realized that she really did love him. What a great example of what love should be made of. Love is a choice not an emotion. Love takes sacrifice not selfishness. Billy Graham said, “If you have love, you are not only going to think no evil, you’re going to take your tongue and have it nailed to the cross so that you bless instead of curse.” Is it possible for the Christian to love others? Is it possible for the Christian to love the way Jesus loved? Song of Solomon 8:7 says, "Many waters cannot quench love, Nor can the floods drown it. If a man would give for love All the wealth of his house, It would be utterly despised." Choosing to love the way Jesus loves will not only change others, but it will also change us. Let us make that choice to love others in Jesus Name!
