Consistency

August 22, 2019

If there ever was a Christian virtue that is much needed in our churches today it has to be consistency.  Too often our churches are filled with people who give up to early in the race.  Too often our churches are filled with people who are inconsistent in word, inconsistent in action and are labeled as inconsistent Christians.  Consistency by way of definition is someone who is reliable, dependable, stable, steady, or true.  Chuck Swindoll said that consistency is the “the jewel worth wearing; the anchor worth weighing; the thread worth weaving; and the battle worth winning.” Someday at our funeral people won’t be sitting around talking about how great of a starter we were, rather people will be discussing how great of a finish we had.  I read of a story about Jonas Salk.  Some of you may not know who he is but Jonas attempted 200 unsuccessful vaccines for polio before he came up with one that actually worked.  Somebody asked him one time, “How did it feel to fail 200 times trying to invent a vaccine for polio?” This was his response: “I never failed 200 times at anything in my life.  My family taught me never to use that word.  I simply discovered 200 ways how not to make a vaccine for polio.”  Wow, that is a great perspective on life.  That should be the way we approach our Christianity.  No matter what happens in our lives no matter what we face we must continue to do what God has called us to do.  Micah 6:8 says, "He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?"
